In October 1916, the Prefect of Constanza, Romania's most important seaport wrote, 'No wonder England is such a great country if her women are like that.' He was referring to the suffragettes/suffragists who, working with Romanian and Serb soldiers, had refused to leave their posts despite the enemy closing in and bombs and shells falling, quite literally, in their midst.
Dr Viv Newman has a well-established reputation as a 'myth buster' about women in the Great War, this talk is no different. Far from the so-recently reviled suffrage activity ending when war broke out, those who had campaigned long and hard for Votes For Women simply transferred their hard-won organising, activist and fundraising skills to winning the war, and the vote. Without them, Victory might not have been possible.
